Blockbusters: Allegiance Does Not Deserve Your Loyalty

The Divergent series showed great promise after the first film came out, but the franchise has gone steeply downhill ever since. The second installment, Insurgent, was a bit iffy, but the most recent one, Allegiant, was just downright terrible.

We’re a bit worried for the next one, Ascendent, which is slated to be released next year. We thought it was only three movies, but there’s another one. Yay…?

The problem with this movie is that it just didn’t make any sense. People were fighting, but for what? We don’t know. Even reading the plot online, the movie had no point.

From the commercials it’s clear that Tris (Shailene Woodley), Four (Theo James), and company leave the wall and stumble upon the seemingly perfect world. Tris and Four then realize that Director David (Jeff Daniels) isn’t as benevolent as he claims he is.

And that’s where the movie got really bad. We don’t understand what David’s ulterior motive was– he claims that he is “experimenting”, but the movie does a poor job explaining what the purpose of his experimentation is. All it gives us is some nonsense about “pure” and “damaged”.

Our biggest pet peeve has to be people somehow not dying. Your plane crashes, you die. Your humvee explodes, you die. But somehow people 200 years in the future don’t.

The only thing that made the movie worth seeing for us was Theo James and Miles Teller. Sadly, Miles Teller will not be returning for the final installment, according to his IMDB page. Is it worth seeing the movie just for James?

Neither of us particularly enjoyed The Hunger Games but one reason we watched it was because everyone did. We saw Allegiant opening weekend, during prime time, and there were 12 people in a theatre that sat 405.

Overall, we don’t recommend Divergent: Allegiant, as Insurgent already did a good job ruining the whole series. And Woodley’s decision to bleach her awful haircut didn’t make it any better.
