This upcoming Wednesday, the Newton South Boys basketball team faces off against Newton North in the first round of the Division 1 South section of the state tournament at Newton North.
The Lions ended the regular season with a solid record of 11-7. Newton North ended the season 16-6 making them the favorite going into Wednesday’s game.
Coming off of a big win against Westford, winning 61-48, the Lions gained momentum for upcoming game against Norths ruthless offense, led by Junior Ethan Wright.
South lost to North earlier in the season by a score of 64-53. The Lions’ will be looking to learn from the past and make up for the loss.
The Lions’ will depend on a core group of four seniors with significant varsity experience to lead the team into Wednesday’s game.
Senior captain Sasha Hoban has played a large role on the team this year and is looking forward to the rowdy atmosphere that will be at the crosstown rivalry game.
“They should look forward to a good game between two good teams,” Hoban said. “It’s gonna be competitive and fun. The atmosphere should be awesome.”
Hoban and the team will look to use their size advantage against the Tigers, a smaller team. Using this height differential to their advantage will be crucial for the Lions.
Despite North’s tough offense, Hoban is confident in South’s capability in facing North. “They are a good team but we think we can compete with them and win the game.”
