After a strong 3-0 start to the season, the boys tennis team ended with a slightly disappointing record of 7-5. Despite this being a winning record, the team was hoping to build off of last year’s record considering they didn’t graduate many seniors.

However, injuries to key starters like junior Henry Feldman and sophomore Ben Kurland prevented the Lions from having their best lineup possible.

“[The] season was pretty good, we had a worse record than last year. [Our worse record] is because we lost maybe three or four games where we did not have our full lineup, it kind of set us back,” sophomore Levi Shlyankevich said.

“Tennis is a very physical sport. There is a lot of running, a lot of starting and stopping. There’s a lot of strain on the body,” Coach Patrick McFarland said in a recent interview with The Lion’s Roar.

Along with not having all their key players, the team also lost many close matches in the final sets.

“Most of our matches came down to the last match, [we] lost a lot of them 3-2 and states second round we lost 3-2 to a really good team [Lexington],” freshman Gabe Nissenbaum said.

Despite this respectable record in the very competitive DCL conference, the Lions are hopeful to improve next year.

Overall, the team had a good year with a winning record and made noise in the state tournament with a win against St. Johns. They are hopeful to improve over the offseason to make up for the three seniors, Jay Maxwell, Jarryd Nissenbaum, and Michael Marget, that graduated.

“I’m not sure which freshmen are coming up, but the people that played this year and are playing next year will get better, so I think we’ll stay solid,” said Shlyankevich.
