ASPIRATIONS IN MEDICINE

What does your club do?

The club promotes awareness about different internships students can partake in both throughout the year and the summer, and there is trip to Harvard for an annual Youth and Public Health Conference, which is a set of lectures and activities about modern day medicine and developments and more.

What kind of person would enjoy this club?

Any person interested in medicine and/or science will enjoy this club, it’s very open and experience isn’t necessary.

What has been the best thing about being a part of this club, in your experience?

The best thing was the Harvard conference probably because it was the biggest event, but knowing more about internship opportunities and general insight was more helpful because it went more in-depth and that it’s useful to people who don’t know very much or want to know more because it can really spark interest.

CHESS CLUB

What does your club do?

We practice chess, give optional lessons, and attend tournaments as a team.

What kind of person would enjoy this club?

Anyone who is remotely interested in chess!  We are open to all chess skill levels.

What has been the best thing about being a part of this club, in your experience?

The best part is definitely hanging out with an awesome group of people and getting better at chess at the same time!

GO CLUB

What does your club do?

Our club aims to teach the board game Go to anybody who wants to learn it, and for those who already know or who have learned, to play with them and have fun.

What kind of person would enjoy this club?

Anybody can enjoy our club, but people who like to think will love this game. Go is a very strategic game, and that’s what makes it so fun and unique. Go is a game that requires a lot of thinking. If you love to think, you will enjoy this club. Still, we believe that Go can be a game for anybody, because it’s rules are simple, and there’s always more to learn.

What has been the best thing about being a member of this club, in your experience?

The best experiences we’ve had so far definitely seeing so many people show up and are genuinely curious about Go. It’s spectacular to see that such an old game can draw so many interesting people.

MAGIC: THE GATHERING

What does your club do?

Our club is a place for people to learn to play Magic: the Gathering or play Magic with a community who likes the game. We have varying levels from entry level players to near professional players.

What kind of person would enjoy this club?

Anybody who would like trading card games in either a competitive or casual environment.

What has been the best thing about being a part of this club, in your experience?

The best part of the club in my experience would certainly be the community we have right now. The people in it are willing to help anyone become better at any aspect of the game at any time.

MATH TEAM

What does your club do?

Math Team goes to many competitions, including an international competition at Harvard or MIT called HMMT, GBML (the local competition), MAML (states), and NEAML (regionals). We prepare for these competitions at Math Team practices. We also help individuals prepare for some of the individual competitions like AMC and AIME, both of which are national competitions.

What kind of person would enjoy this club?

The person who would most enjoy this club is not necessarily the person who is best at math, but rather the person who already enjoys doing math. In my recruiting experience, it is difficult to foster an enjoyment of math in people who don’t already enjoy it. As far as I am concerned, only one person, a former captain, thought math team was pathetic before she joined and thought it was awesome.

What has been the best thing about being a part of this club, in your experience?

The best part about this club is the community that we as a team have created. We are a diverse group that is centered around one thing: math. We may be a group of math nerds, but we help represent South as a whole.

SCIENCE TEAM

What does your club do?

We in the Science Team do two main types of things: competitions and community events. Competition-wise, we go to tournaments that test our skill in engineering, our ability to reason, and our knowledge of a subject; examples of these competitions include the State Science Olympiad and the TEAMS competition.  Community-wise, we buzz jeopardy-style after school for fun, go to laser tag, have parties, and much more.

What kind of person would enjoy being in this club?

I’d say three kinds of people.  First, those who are bored in their science classes and wish to gain an advanced understanding of topics.  Second, those who wish to compete in higher-level competitions.  But the third group, which encompasses the others, is simply people who love science.  Want to drop by to learn about something, to ask a question and get a thoughtful response, or to make liquid nitrogen ice cream?  We’d love to have you!

What has been the best thing about being a part of this club, in your experience?

For me, the members themselves.  I’ve met some of my closest friends through the Science Team, and I’ve met so many other thoughtful, kind, intelligent people too.
