CHILDREN OF THE CANDY CORN

What does your club do?

Children of the Candy Corn is an improv comedy group. Basically, we do scenes and games in which we make up jokes and characters on the spot. Nothing is planned beforehand, even though our haters like to say so. We practice twice a week to prepare for improv shows that we do during the year.

What kind of person would enjoy this club?

If you’re funny, you would fit in with Candy Corn pretty well. If everyone in your math class laughs at your jokes or you can do lots of characters, then you should audition. Especially freshmen and sophomores- I promise we’re not scary!

What has been the best thing about being a part of this club, in your experience?

The best thing about Candy Corn is the people. We spend four hours at each other’s houses each week so we get really close. Corn has given me so much confidence and made me a better actor. Everyone should audition, it’s really dope.

CHOREOSOUTH

What does your club do?

We teach each other different dances and dance moves– basically just combos.

What kind of person would enjoy this club?

Dancers and people that want to learn to dance would enjoy this club. We try to be super encouraging and this year the people that joined had little to no dance experience, but they still had a good time learning and it was super fun. But with that being said, I think that even experienced dancers would have a good time because we did try to do some more challenging combos as well. This year, we want to really recruit more people and hopefully have Newton South’s first ever dance night show.

What has been the best thing about being a part of this club, in your experience?

Getting to see kids experience dance at a whole new level has just been really rewarding. A lot of people are too scared because they think they can’t dance or whatever, but that’s so not true– you never know until you try!

CRESCENDO (A CAPPELLA CLUB)

What does your club do?

The Newton South a cappella group, Crescendo, is a group that sings contemporary a cappella music. At each rehearsal, singers learn how to arrange and sing a cappella music in a collaborative environment. We give singers the opportunity to improve their musical skills and have fun singing with their peers. We perform several times a year in various locations around the Newton and greater Boston area.

What kind of person would enjoy this club?

If you enjoy singing and are looking for an opportunity to improve your musical skills and perform with your peers, Crescendo is for you.

What has been the best thing about being a part of this club, in your experience?

For me, the best part about this group is being able to perform and share the joy of music with others. In the past year, we have performed around Newton and the Greater Boston area, and it has been so much fun to sing with such a great community. If you’re interested

In joining Crescendo, feel free to send an email to hlcolani@gmail.com.

EUPHONIC

What does your club do?

We’re an acappella group, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously. We take a wide variety of music– everything from Wham! to Bo Burnham– and create new arrangements that we can work on in a supportive and laid back environment.

What kind of person would enjoy being in this club?

Anyone with a passion for music and singing (or beatboxing) is always welcome, but we’re also an excellent place to hang out, eat some good food, and bust out some corny dance moves while making music.

What has been the best thing about being a part of this club, in your experience?

The best thing for me is seeing how much we’ve grown– we’re a new organization so we’ve only been around for a year. Performing a song after working on it for weeks is such a great feeling, and getting to do it with people you care about is one of the most rewarding experiences I can think of.

FILM CLUB

What does your club do?

We collaborate on writing, directing, and acting in a short film to be submitted into a film festival at the end of the year. And of course chilling, just watching movies, and eating food.

What kind of person would enjoy this club?

Everybody is welcome, but people with a creative side would love it. People who love writing would be able to write scripts, people who love acting can act, people who love directing and editing can do that, people who love fashion can help with costume design, and many, many, more.

What has been the best thing about being a part of this club, in your experience?

This upcoming year will be our first year, but we are looking forward to creating warm, inviting and imaginative experience and fostering a community as well as creating a stress free zone to relax in.

MODEL UN

What does your club do?

Model United Nations is a competition during which students get the opportunity to learn about and represent nations from all over the globe while trying to resolve important political, economic, and scientific issues. Model UN prepares you for the real world and leadership situations that you won’t find in a high school or any other club. You will find different types of people that you want to meet in your life and you will be exposed to different cultures early on to diminish ignorance.

What kind of person would enjoy this club?

The kind of person who would enjoy this club is the type of person who likes current events and likes to have fun with them. This person is not afraid of a challenge and loves to meet new people, and is open to public speaking. Model UN is an extremely welcoming community that accepts everyone and helps each other flourish. It’s a cool club.

What has been the best thing about being a part of this club, in your experience?

The best part about being in Model UN is the atmosphere it creates. When I go to colleges or other high schools for competitions, it feels so great to know that other students from around the world have traveled far because they are passionate about the club and its issues. You meet a diverse range of people from so many different countries and states.

NEWTONES

What does your club do?

Newtones is a co-ed, completely student run, outside of school a cappella group that performs at South, in Boston and in the greater Boston area, at colleges, schools, and ICHSA (International Competition for High School A Capella) each year.

What kind of person would enjoy this club?

Anyone who has an interest in singing, regardless of whether or not singing is a currently huge part of your life, should audition. Don’t be shy, and just be you!

What has been the best thing about being a part of this club, in your experience?

The best thing about this group, besides the diverse and different musical set lists created and performed each year, is seeing the way the group changes each year dynamically and knowing that you are a part of such a strong, welcoming, and supportive community of people who are there for you your whole (or part of) high school career.

SINFONIETTA

What does your club do?

We are a chamber orchestra that meets every Tuesday right after school in the orchestra room. We play tons of different types of music, performing at nursing homes, Tertulia, Passing Time, and Asian Night. If you love playing any type of instrument, come hang out with us!

What kind of person would enjoy this club?

Anyone who plays any type of instrument would enjoy this club.

What has been the best thing about being a part of this club, in your experience?

The best part about Sinfonietta is the ability to let go, just enjoy music, and share it with others around you.

SPEECH AND DEBATE

What does your club do?

We spend time coaching each other and getting feedback on our public speaking, acting, and argumentation. We do so to perform better at tournaments, which are most Saturdays during the year.

What kind of person would enjoy being in this club?

People who like language, who enjoy an audience, who command a room, who act well, who want are competitive but dislike sports, or who want to be any of those things.

What has been the best thing about being a part of this club, in your experience?

The best part is the friendships you build with like-minded people and the skills you get to develop. I am orders of magnitude better at public speaking, writing, and thinking because I do this. In general, it just makes me happy.
