Yes, Ed Sheeran is back from the dead! This Grammy-winning artist decided to take a break from social media, and although we did not expect him to take this long (it’s been almost two years since his last release), it sure was worth it!
According to an article from etonline, Sheeran shared this with us, “I have an addictive personality, you can see from the tattoos. So, my New Year’s resolution was to get off social media. I’ve got one of those little drug dealer phones– untraceable burners without any social media. I told [Adele] I got a flip phone and she thought I was taking the mick out of her.”
Shocking right? Although his time off was heartbreaking, on Friday, January 6th, Sheeran broke the curse and started the New Year off right by giving us two songs from his new album, “Shape of You” and “Castle on the Hill”. The full album, entitled Divide, will be released on March 3rd, so until then, we’re left to wonder how the entire piece might manage to encompass these two very different songs.
“Shape of You”, about a budding romance, has an alternative side with a tribal beat and is different from most of his past music. However, different is not necessarily a bad thing, as this song is definitely a hit. “Shape of You” has a little bit of everything, which is not a shock, considering it is coming from Sheeran. “Shape of You” currently stands at Number 1 on the overall iTunes charts, whereas “Castle on the Hill” is at Number 7 on the overall charts, and Number 3 on the pop charts!
“Castle on the Hill” is the perfect song following his long break, as it recalls bittersweet hometown memories. It has an upbeat tune and automatically gives people the feels. It is for sure a feel-good song.
Not only did Sheeran come back with a bang, but he also made history!
According to Billboard, “Ed Sheeran has made history Down Under by becoming the first artist to have simultaneous debuts at No. 1 and No. 2 on the ARIA Singles Chart, where these tracks manage a feat never seen before on the National Albums Chart.”
What other artist could do that other than Ed Sheeran? The answer is no one. You do not need to like Sheeran to like his new music, because it really can be categorized under every genre– that’s what’s so special about Sheeran as an artist. Both of these songs are phenomenal and only make us more excited for his full album to come!
Good to have you back, Ed Sheeran– we can’t wait to hear more!
