This Week In Arts

This Past Week:

Thursday, 9/17: Broadway actors and Newton alums Tess Primack (Fiddler on the Roof) and Ryan Vona (Once) came back to their hometown to instill Newton South students with their knowledge of the college process, professional acting, and general life success. The pair discussed the importance of kindness and resilience in the face of rejection. Both emphasized that you will end up where you’re meant to be, both in college and in life, but also spoke on the importance of preparation and dedication, as well as the benefits of creating your own work.

Friday, 9/18 and Saturday, 9/19: The Newton theater scene had its first performance of the year with Newton Theatre Company’s Junie B. Jones and The Yucky Blucky Fruitcake. Starring students from both North and South, as well as elementary and middle school students and community educators and parents, the show was a truthful and spirited adaptation of Barbara Park’s beloved childrens book. With a set consisting mainly of chalk drawings done by audience members, vibrant costumes, and an interactive theatrical experience, NTC (with the help of Theatre Ink) was able to open the world of theater up to the next generation, and to give them a memory as vibrant and colorful as a carnival prize.

Saturday, 9/19 and Sunday, 9/20: Newton South’s Varsity Speech and Debate Team traveled to New Haven, Connecticut, to participate in the Yale Invitational tournament. While the team did not win any sweepstake awards, there were many standout individuals: Senior Shira Abramovich won fifth place in Original Oratory while seniors Liel Dolev and Winson Ye and juniors James Rao and Aidan Bassett competed in the out rounds. The tournament was a strong start to what is sure to be an impressive season.

This Coming Week:

Monday 9/21: Newtones, Newton South’s entirely student-run a cappella group, will be holding an informational meeting during J block in the chorus room (9141). The group does several performances during the year, including fundraisers and competitions. Auditions are open to students of all grades. In addition, an interest meeting for a new a cappella group will be held during J block in 6266. This group will be all-inclusive and looks forward to increasing its size and talents. If you can’t make the meeting or have any additional questions, you can email sophomore Hannah Cole at hlcolani@gmail.com.
