This Coming Week:

Wednesday 3/23: At 7:00 pm, various music groups from Newton South will perform in the auditorium. The Symphonic Band, Madrigals, Orchestra, and Wind Ensemble will all contribute to the night’s performance. These groups are excited to entertain their audience, but are also looking to use this as an opportunity to practice for the upcoming MICCA Festival. This event, which will take place in April, is a day-long experience during which each group will play their select pieces in front of professional judges. Schools and ensembles from all over Massachusetts come hoping win gold in the competition, which will give them the opportunity to perform at Symphony Hall. Not only is it a good place to demonstrate a group’s talent, but it’s an excellent chance to get feedback from professional musicians. It is a unique experience, and the performance this Wednesday will showcase just how ready each group is.

This Past Week:

Thursday 3/17 through Sunday 3/20: Theatre Ink’s production of Oliver! was a grand success. With an intensely talented cast, versatile set, and stunning costumes, this production gave viewers a peek into the destitution, but also brief moments of joy, that constitute the Dickensian world. Theatre Ink’s next production will be of Spontaneous Generation, North’s improv group. The performance will be on April 6 to April 9 in the auditorium.

Saturday 3/26: This past Saturday afternoon, South’s Jazz Ensemble performed at the MAJE all-state festival. MAJE (Massachusetts Association for Jazz Education) is the jazz equivalent of MICCA, which focuses more on classical music. After lots of hard work, the group won silver in the competition. Newton South musician Joshua Freier also won an award for outstanding musicianship. Although the group was hoping for gold, the Jazz Combo Group will perform in a MAJE competition at the end of April, giving South’s musician’s a chance at redemption.
