This Week In Arts

This Past Week:

Friday 10/24: Reflections, Newton South’s literary magazine, partnered with WAI, Newton South’s promoter of access to safe water worldwide, to put on Halloween Barn. This event featured student performances, plenty of tea, and a chance for audience members to fill out “barn books” with their own art and writing. Halloween Barn was the first of several planned coffee house style events that will be held throughout the year. This first event managed to raise $100.50 for both organizations.

Monday 10/26: The first meeting of ChoreoSouth, Newton South’s first ever combined choreography and dance club, will meet in the dance studio (next to the weight room) during J-block. Open to students with any level of training in any style of dance, this club is an effort by students to explore the joys of creating their own dances and to foster a stronger dance culture at South.

This Coming Week:

Wednesday 10/28 through Friday 10/30: South Stage’s first musical of the year, Girlhood, opens this week. This production, which includes music from shows ranging from Wicked to Into the Woods to Heathers: The Musical, is an exploration of what it means to be a girl and how people try to escape or conform to the boxes in which society places them. Girlhood includes original works from the cast and true stories from their lives. Tickets can be purchased at southstage.org and in the cafeteria and Theater Office.
