April 20 – Boston Marathon Provides Hope for the City

On Monday, over 30,000 people ran in the 119th annual Boston Marathon. Multiple victims of the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013 ran and finished the marathon this year. The marathon played an important role in spreading other inspiring stories of perseverance, including that of Maickel Melamed. Melamed, who was born with muscular dystrophy, a disease that severely weakens the muscles, was the last runner to finish after 20 hours in cold, wet weather.

Chilean Volcano Erupts For First Time Since 1972

Chile’s Calbuco volcano erupted twice this past week, showing its first signs of activity in 42 years. The eruptions buried the surrounding towns in ash with some areas receive more than 23 inches. The first eruption was the smaller of the two, but both resulted in massive mushroom clouds of ash. The country has declared a state of emergency and evacuations have begun for people and animals. There have been no reported injuries or deaths, but the region is still on high alert as a third eruption may be imminent.

April 26 – South Freshman Takes Control of Local Restaurant

Freshman Robert Dandliker will be taking over the restaurant, Cuisine en Locale on Sunday at 5 p.m. as head chef. Dandliker has been cooking since he could remember, and Cuisine en Locale thinks he would be a perfect candidate for the best 20 cooks under 20. Dandliker has worked under the supervision of Tony Maws at Craigie and Kirkland Tap restaurants for three years, and is ecstatic to have the opportunity to be in charge of a real restaurant. Dandliker is especially excited to cook his signature pea and mushroom gallimaufry, which was inspired by the restaurant Sycamore, in Newton Centre, and his love of spring. Tickets are $85 for the fixed price, and the menu includes a five course meal from country pate to a roasted rack of lamb.
