This Past Week:

Wednesday, 12/2/15 – Superintendent Visits to South to Discuss College Stress

Superintendent David Fleishman visited Newton South on Dec. 2 to discuss Frank Bruni’s book, “Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be.”

Bruni, an acclaimed journalist and author, makes the claim that where one goes to college is not as important as one may think. The conversation was centered on this as well as the college process and how to manage the stress related with the process.

Fleishman emphasized that although Newton “has developed a college planning philosophy designed to support students and families,” there are still measures that need to be taken to limit stress on students and families.

The panel included Jennifer King, Newton South college consultant, Beth Swederkas, Newton North Guidance Department Head, and Ronne Patrick Turner, Northeastern University Dean of Admissions.

This coming week:

Tuesday, 12/8/15 – Students Have Early Dismissal for Parent-Teacher Conferences

Students will be dismissed at 1 PM this Tuesday as parent-teacher conferences are scheduled after school. See the special schedule here.

Senior College Deadlines Approaching

According to the Newton South Parent Teacher Student Organization, almost every senior who plans to attend college has now solidified his or her list of prospective colleges.

As the college admission process continues at South, the administration also urges students to confirm that they have fulfilled all their requirements before they submit their applications. The College and Career Center will be open up until mid-January for application support.

NewTV Hosts Film Challenge for Newton Students

NewTV is hosting a one-week film challenge for Newton high school students from Feb. 14 to 21.

The objective is to write, film, and edit a four to seven minute movie. Each team must blindly draw the genre of the film as well as a required character, prop, and line out of a hat.

The films will then be judged and the three winners will have their films shown at a NewTV event and the first-place winner will receive a special prize.

The kickoff event will take place on Feb. 13, in which teams will participate in the genre selection and officially register for the event.

Production groups can sign up anytime from Dec. 7 until Feb. 13 by contacting joeg@newtv.org.
