This Week In…Sports

Spring has finally arrived (sort of), and with it, Newton South’s nine spring sports programs are gearing up for the start of games.

Snow still blankets much of Newton, but that won’t stop the boys’ volleyball team from taking on Lincoln-Sudbury in the gym on Friday, March 27. The defending state champions will look to start strong against the Warriors, one of the Lions’ fiercest rivals in the Dual County League.
Slowly but surely, Newton South teams are migrating out of the field house and back onto their respective fields and courts.

Weather permitting, most South teams will begin competition with other schools starting this weekend. The girls’ lacrosse team scrimmaged this past weekend, while the baseball team was set to travel to Plymouth for a weekend slate of games before the games got cancelled due to uncertain weather conditions.

With better forecasts for the week to come, teams are hopeful that fields will be playable in time for the start of their respective seasons. Seven varsity games and matches across all sports are scheduled before the end of March, and teams hope that they have made the best of their practice time, regardless of whenever or wherever they were forced to practice the past two weeks.

Moving on to the Madness: Stop complaining about your busted March Madness bracket! Everyone has heard it all before. You absolutely should not have picked #3 Iowa State to go the Final Four, nor #1 Villanova or #2 Virginia. Actually, you should have, because March Madness is a crap-shoot where anything can happen.

There are 9.2 quintillion possible outcomes of the 2015 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, some more likely than others, but with the tournament narrowed down to the Sweet Sixteen it is safe to assume that no one from Newton South is walking away with ESPN Tournament Challenge’s grand prize.

Try not to throw your TV remote when March Madness inevitably knocks your team out again this weekend! Or, better yet, come out to see the spring sports kick their seasons off as the snow all-too-slowly melts and the smells of spring fill the air.
