The Newton South girls’ track team topped DCL rival Lincoln-Sudbury 71-41 this past Wednesday with a complete team effort.

“We really demonstrated how much depth our team has, and there were great performances from all distances, as well as field events,” junior Caroline Barry said.

Junior Caroline Barry took first place in the mile while senior captain Katie Collins scored both in the mile and the two mile with second and first place respectively in an impressive double.

Collins wasn’t running her hardest, due to the fact that she helped pace freshman Addie Marple the first few laps. Nevertheless, she managed to win the race and be a key component in the Lion’s victory.

Not only did the girls distance dominate, but the sprinters and mid-distance runners came in clutch as well. In particular, junior Emily Bulczynski scored second place in the 400-meter race in a time of 63 seconds, while senior Calene Lazare blew out the competition in the 200-meter dash.

The girls success didn’t stop with running events. They managed to sweep both the long jump and shot put with incredible performances from senior Calene Lazare and Anna Bierenbaum both scoring first respectively.

Lincoln-Sudbury and Newton South traditionally have talented track and field programs, creating a rivalry between the two. However, the Lions ran with poise on their way to a commanding victory.

“[We] handled the tough competition really well, and left our hearts on the track, or in the pits,” Barry said.

Overall nothing has changed from the indoor season in which the girls’ team captured the Division one State Championship. These girls are still hungry for another DCL and championship as they look forward to the remainder of the season.
