As the snow melts and the temperatures rises, the Girl’s Track & Field team looks to have yet another successful season. As the Lions begin their hard first week of practice, they prepare for the season opener. April 10th, the girls will be competing against Westford Academy in an away meet.
The Lions are coming into this season with a determined mentality.
“One of our main goals is to create a strong, supportive, and unified team so that throughout the season we will be able to push each other to do our best,” said Senior Captain Megan Walsh.
The girls are a very talented group who are ready to face their opponents head on, or rather side by side. However, despite their confidence this team has still believes there is a lot that can be made better and put a tremendous emphasis on improvement, starting at practice.
One of the key factors in improvement is staying focused on what is important. From the beginning of the season to the end, the team has to stay on task and work hard.
One athlete the team can rely on to give it her all is Lucy Jenks. With an incredibly successful indoor track season, Jenks is hoping to continue on this path outdoors.
Jenks ended her indoor track season at the New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York. With her drive and determination, she placed fifth in the one mile event, earning herself an All American title as a Junior. Her mile time, 4:45.93, was outstanding as she was able to cut a significant amount of time from her previous meet.
Another athlete to look out for this upcoming season is sophomore Kaity Shaugnessy. Just coming off of her first impressive season of indoor track, during which she placed 4th in the DCL, she is ready to keep the energy rolling into her second season of outdoor track.
“I am very excited for the upcoming season,” said the impressive high jumper, “I am hoping for a personal record. I’m also excited to see how the team will do and improve from last year.”
Although the team experienced significant losses, like Caroline Barry, who nows runs for Boston College, it appears that the team’s younger athletes are ready to step up to the plate.
Overall, this team is one to watch. They are an exhilarating group, boasting talent in every event, who hope to dominate the DCL this upcoming season. Come support the team at Westford Academy on Wednesday, April,10th.
