For the first time in Newton South history, the senior class will have a homecoming dance.. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Class of 2022 has had only one school-sanctioned event—their freshman cruise in 2019. Other anticipated events, such as the junior semi dance, were canceled due to state-wide school closures and the partially remote 2020-2021 school year. Luckily, they now can look forward to “hoco”, which will take place on Saturday, October 16th.

Senior Annie Podufaly reiterates this excitement, saying, “I’m glad that they are replacing [the semi dance]. I also think that our class officers did a really good job trying to get everyone to experience some kind of dance since our class has only had the freshman cruise.”

However, she adds that “we did not know about it until about a month beforehand, so we do not have a lot of time to pick out dresses and everything.”

It is unknown exactly where and at what time homecoming will take place; nonetheless, the dance should serve as a fun time for the senior class and add a feeling of normalcy to their abnormal high school experience.

As senior Brooke Lieber puts it, “I’m definitely excited to have a normal high school experience because I think our grade has suffered enough from missing out.” However, she is “curious if it will be a one and done due to COVID or if this may begin a new South tradition.”

Adding on to Brooke, senior Shayan Bakhtyari says, “I really like that we are the first grade to have [a homecoming dance]. I hope they keep this up… You know, to be with wonderful people, with wonderful weather, hopefully eating wonderful food—I think it’s a dream come true.”
