Shortly before Thanksgiving break, Newton South held its first annual Turkey Toss in replacement of the controversial Powderpuff game. Two teams from every grade were selected to participate and were trained in turkey-tossing techniques. As students gathered for the event, athletes began to warm up with their partners. The tournament was soon underway as teams faced off against each other, throwing wrapped and frozen turkeys to their partners. As team after team dropped the bird, the remaining contenders diminished.

The games were approaching the quarter-finals when the halftime show, featuring Newton South’s very own Dance Team, was performed for a cheering crowd. They danced impressively, showing off flips and cartwheels despite the cold weather. After a five-minute performance, the dance troupe exited the field, and games resumed.

2024’s class President Kevin Yang began winding up for the first toss of the quarter-finals. A frozen turkey soared through the air as Kevin expertly threw it to his partner with precision. Unfortunately, the catch was fumbled, bringing their winning streak and hopes for victory to a halt. When later interviewed, Kevin thought that better throwing techniques could improve his future chances and remained optimistic that “next year [they will] be eating it up”.

The same enthusiasm could be felt by all the athletes as the finalists prepared for the ultimate showdown. As seniors Jaidin Russell and Nico Hensch made eye contact, they prepared to throw what would be the final toss of the afternoon. Their opponents, juniors Noah and Will lined up parallel on the football field. At the sound of commentator/referee Brendan Weissel’s “go!” two large packaged turkeys soared through the air and across the field. Nico Hensch had his arms wide open as the turkey came flying down. He snatched the cold bird before it could slip out of his arms, showcasing impressive athletic talent. The second bird came tumbling down only moments later, but it was too fast for Noah Bruce to grab onto. As the cheers settled and teammates congratulated each other, Seniors Nico Hensch and Jaden Russel took home South’s very first Turkey-Toss gold trophy.
