Senior captain Elena Ramos’ stellar defense was not enough to hold off the Lions’ cross-town rival as the girls’ lacrosse team lost its last game at North Wednesday, 17-7.
After the first half, North was up 8-3. South came back strong at the beginning of the second half, with junior Amy Cohen and senior Jessie Katz scoring goals. North began to dominate the game once again at the end of the game, scoring 9 more consecutive goals.
North midfielder Shannon Fitzgerald led the team throughout the game, scoring the majority of her team’s goals.
South head coach Erica Shapiro was happy with the team’s defense, but believes the team can still improve on other aspects.
“Our slides were great,” Shapiro said. “We were great on one on one defense today.
“Our turnovers in the midfield today were poor, though, and we made little errors on the field, like dropping the ball.”
Although it lost, the team feels it has improved from last year’s season.
“We have improved on every component this year,” senior captain Kayla Kee said. “Most of us came in to the sport as freshman; now its four years later, and we have improved dramatically.”
The team finished out the season with a record of 5-11-2, just shy of the playoffs.
“The team didn’t win a game last year,” Shapiro said. “This season was an improvement, but of course we want more. We are going to look towards playing even better next year.”
