Fall Preview: Field Hockey Looks To Grow Program

Coach: Kim Desto

Captains: Melanie Gundersheim, Ashley Heesch

Coming off a season with one win, the first for the field hockey program in many years, the team has been training in the offseason to make it the first win of many.

According to senior captain Melanie Gundersheim, winning isn’t everything. Her hopes for this upcoming season consist of reinventing the reputation for the sport she loves.

“It would rock to win and I hope we do,” Gundersheim said. “However, my goal in general is to build up the team and the field hockey program so that it becomes a more positive sport at South instead of a total joke.”

Summer training has the team on the right path, Gundersheim said.

“In mid August we started pre season as a team and basically did a ton of conditioning and prep to get everyone in shape for the season,” Gundersheim said. “Once that was over we all played in the mini tournament at Newton North so that new players could adjust to the game.”

The field hockey team was in need of some new players after losing 16 seniors last year. Junior captain Ashley Heesch believes the new players had no trouble replacing the graduates.

“[The new players] are all really dedicated much like our returning players,” Heesch said. “The energy is just so positive and uplifting. It’s nice to see a bunch of new people be so eager and so willing to go and put themselves out there to try new things.”

Heesch has high hopes for the season and believes the team can win many games, though more importantly, leave everything on the field.

“Our main goals are to bring in as many wins as we can, and always give 110%,” Heesch said. “Even if we don’t win, I know that our team will have good sportsmanship, and exit the field knowing that we gave it our all.”

“I’m excited to see what becomes of our 2013 field hockey family,” Heesch said.
