Preview: Cross Town Garden Rivalry

Newton South takes on the Newton North Tigers on saturday, Jan 10, at the TD Garden. Denebola asked Mackenzie Silvia from the Newtonite about the upcoming game:

What has been North’s strength this season?

“This season, a lot of different players have stepped up when needed. Whether its hitting those important three pointers, or our big men pulling down some key rebounds. I think the team camaraderie and how quickly the team has bonded is a huge reason that so many players are confident enough to step up and get the job done.”

How has North struggled this season?

“There have been some early season issues with the team defense. The Tigers have had some struggles on defense due to a lack of height against certain teams. North must work extremely hard to pick up the speed on defense to make up for the height.”

Who has been playing exceptionally well for North?

“The team has some serious three point shooters this season. Seniors Sam Jefferson and Tommy Mobley are consistent scorers behind the three point line. Freshman Ethan Wright has stepped up this season and has hit many threes for the Tigers. Big men Nate Hollenberg, and Brett Stanton have done a great job not only offensively, but also defensively with the rebounds.”

How has North prepared for this game?

“North has prepared for this game through focused and competitive practices where the defensive deficiencies have been addressed . The team is on an undefeated streak of 8-0 and has beat many highly ranked teams which has given them good practice for the Garden game.”

What do you think we can expect from North?

“North is going to come out very confident. With an 8-0 record and beating South 71-69in a come from behind victory, has the team fired up. The intensity level will be high, and if the team can hit their shots and remain as a unit on defense, I think the Tigers will have great success on Saturday.”
