March 12-14 – South Stage put on its fifth show of the year, The Rocky Horror Show. This cult classic, which involves classic rock and over thirty-five actors decked out in glitter and bustiers, follows the adventures of Brad Majors and Janet Weiss as they find themselves trapped in a house full of hedonistic transsexual aliens out to have a good time. This show, though pretty out there in terms of the raunchy motifs, encompasses a strong message of acceptance and self love, demonstrating that there is nothing wrong with finding what you love and going after what makes you happy, no matter what other people think of you. Jeff Knoedler, the director of the production, dedicated the show to all those who have ever gone to a midnight showing of the film and “to anyone who has ever been made to feel like an alien because of what or who they love.”
March 12-15 – Theater Ink, Newton North’s theater company, performed its winter musical, Once Upon a Mattress. A modern twist on the classic tale of The Princess and the Pea, the production showcased a wide variety of talent from all of its cast members and a nearly unrivaled attention to detail, both in the acting and technical aspects of the show. Written in 1959, Once Upon a Mattress created an interesting juxtaposition by being both incredibly progressive and painfully dated.
A Look Forward to the Coming Week:
This Wednesday March 18, Newton South’s Symphonic Band, Madrigals, Orchestra, and Wind Ensemble will be having a concert in the Seasholes Auditorium at 7 P.M.
Rehearsals start this week for the three spring season shows: Student Directing Festival, Macbeth, and Mechanical Boy.
