NEWTON– During the early morning hours of this past Monday, disaster struck junior Sydney Knapstick. While walking to her advisory after B block, her eyes met with those of her freshman year Spanish teacher, Señora Maria.
At this point, Knapstick knew it was life or death, there was no way out, as the two were walking right at each other. Knapstick had no other option but to acknowledge Señora Maria and her ominous wave.
With recent rules encouraging students not to text and walk, Knapstick assumed her safety was assured.
She was wrong.
After an excruciating minute and a half of conversation about her vacation, Knapstick somehow survived. Very few people have been through hallway conversations with past teachers and lived to tell about it. Our reporters were able to catch up with Knapstick while she was being attended to by local paramedics: “I should have been more careful, I knew her classroom was right there,” she said.
As a normally safe hallway walker, Knapstick is accustomed to the rules of the hall. “I’ve heard stories of people not paying attention when walking and I… I… I just never thought it could happen to me,” Knapstick said.
Walking away with only minor embarrassment and a weird exchange of goodbyes, Knapstick says she’s lucky to be alive. “I really just have to thank Jesus,” she said. “If he didn’t ring that bell starting advisory, who knows what could have happened to me.”
