Rules of the Game: Indoor Track and Field

From an outsider’s perspective, the scoring system for indoor track can seem a little overwhelming. However, under close examination it is really quite simple.
Newton South only races one team at dual meets. So although all 11 Dual County League schools may arrive at the Reggie Lewis Track Arena or the Boston University Track and Tennis Center (where the Lions race), South only races one team.
There are 12 events at each meet. The 55 meter dash, the 55 meter hurdles, 300 meters, 600 meters, 1000 meters, 1 mile, 2 mile, 4 by 200 meter and 4 by 400 meter relays. For field events, there is the long jump, high jump, and shot put.
In all of those events except the relays, first place is worth five points, second place is worth three points, and one point is worth to third place. For the relays, the winning team gets five points and the losing team gets 0.
At the end of the meet, all the points are added up and the team with the most points win. Therefore, a maximum of 100 points are on the table, with teams needing 51 points to win.
