A Debrief of the 2025 Grammy Nominations

The 2024 music scene made a strong impression this Grammy season, with Charli XCX’s “Brat” earning seven nominations and Chappell Roan’s debut album, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” securing six nominations.

On November 8th, the Grammy nominations sparked mixed reactions from the public. While the Grammys put a spotlight on newer artists, some believed they have also extended their gratitude too far to some unfavored artists—Nonetheless, the winners are to be announced soon, and until then, only time will tell how the outcomes will be perceived.

Shortly before the Grammys announced nominations, prediction videos swarmed TikTok. The main categories people made predictions for were Song of the Year, Best New Artist, and the highly anticipated Album of the Year. For Album of the Year, most predictions were for Ariana Grande’s “Eternal Sunshine”, Taylor Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department”, Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter”, Charli XCX’s “Brat”, Billie Eilish’s “Hit Me Hard and Soft”, Chappell Roan’s “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess”, Post Malone’s “F-1 Trillion”, and Sabrina Carpenter’s “Short n’ Sweet”.

On par with popular opinion, the actual nominees for Album of the Year were André 3000’s “New Blue Sun”, Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter”, Sabrina Carpenter’s “Short n’ Sweet”, Charli XCX’s “Brat”, Jacob Collier’s “Djesse Vol. 4”, Billie Eilish’s “Hit Me Hard and Soft”, Chappell Roan’s “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess”, and Taylor Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department”.

After the Grammys released the nominations to the public, people took to social media to express their feelings regarding the limited recognition given to Ariana Grande. Ariana Grande, a singer of fourteen years, earned nominations in three categories this year: Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Dance Pop Recording, and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.

Many consider “Eternal Sunshine” to be her best work, and feel it deserved a nomination for Album of the Year, especially since the album topped the Billboard 200 for two consecutive weeks. However, critics argue the album fell short in terms of creative depth.

The public’s resentment only grew when Tyla, Dua Lipa, Doja Cat, and Megan Thee Stallion’s works were overlooked and were not nominated for a single category. Sophomore Katrina Tran agrees and expressed her belief that there were several notable snubs, particularly for artists like Dua Lipa and Ariana Grande, whom she feels is long overdue for a Grammy.

“Ariana Grande hasn’t made an album in a long time, [and the] one time she does she barely gets any nominations.”she said,“[The Grammys] paid attention to the major singers this year like Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter.”

After considering the nominees for Album of the Year, Tran also highlighted the standout qualities of Charli XCX’s album ‘Brat’. She emphasized its cultural significance and the lasting impact it had on listeners and the music industry alike.

During November, nominated artists utilized social media to showcase their appreciation for their fans and the Recording Academy.

Sabrina Carpenter took to Instagram to share a heartfelt statement: “This is the first year I’ve watched the live stream where i heard my name! I’d be lying if i said i hadn’t dreamt about this day my whole life so i am filled with gratitude– Thank you…”

Madison Beer, nominated for Best Dance Pop Recording for her song, “Make You Mine,” posted a series of “thank yous” alongside photos of her nomination displayed on a TV screen.

Overall, the 2025 nominations effectively harness the creative energy of 2024 and set the standards high for future music. As this year’s music production comes to a bittersweet ending, fans eagerly await the awards ceremony on February 2nd, 2025.
