The girls’ gymnastics team recently broke a school record with a total of 140.45 points in their competition against Billerica.
After working through a difficult preseason, the team is thrilled to see such results so early in the year.
“It was amazing because it was only our first meet,” sophomore Bailey Steinberg said.
The team identifies several areas of improvement that have propelled them to this record. Steinberg and Captain Kaela Meyer both agree that having club gymnasts on the team have benefitted them significantly.
“Club gymnasts tend to be a lot more competitive,” Meyer said, “We have a lot of club gymnasts that practice all year round. Most high schools don’t have many club gymnasts while we have quite a few.”
The squad’s new freshmen have also brought some much-needed depth to the gymnastics team. Steinberg and Meyer agree that freshmen Sally Jenks and Kalena Wang have excelled so far this year.
“Sally and Kalena have competed in most all events and have done amazingly,” Steinberg said.
Despite multiple injuries to the team, South’s gymnasts performed exceptionally well in their first meet, culminating in the team setting a new points record.
“We are still doing amazing even though we are dealing with some injuries,” Steinberg said.
Meyer and Steinberg believe that there has been much improvement this year, considering that they lost to Billerica the previous season. Still, the gymnasts remain focused on continuing to progress and build upon their success.
“The team as a whole has improved significantly from last year,” Steinberg said. “I know we’re going to have a great season.”
