Many of us met the French exchange students when they came in October. If you enjoyed learning about their culture, you will be excited to hear that, for the first time in Newton South’s history, Roman exchange students will be joining us for two weeks in December. No one could find any native Latin speakers from the present day, so Newton South will be transporting the students directly from 227 BCE! Although they aren’t very familiar with modern technology, the incoming students do have a mysterious knowledge of the English language. Some fun things you can do with them include:

-Turning on and off the lights
-Showing them your phones – take a selfie for instant confusion
-Using them to cheat on your next Latin word roots quiz
-Take them to a historic movie and asking if it’s accurate
-Telling them Rome is now only a city

Warning! Make sure not to show off too much technology at once, or you could be accused of witchcraft. You could also anger them if you forget to yell “Spoiler alert!” before walking into history class, or if you tell them togas are out of fashion.

Only 3 brave Newton students have decided to visit Rome in the spring. Public health officials have attempted to block the trip, before realizing the Roman students are coming and will get everyone sick with ancient diseases anyway. History teachers are still meeting to figure out the best time period of Rome to visit – so far, they’re suggesting 74 CE, when only a few people were rioting, and only one war was being fought, instead of three.
