Almost one term into her first year at South, new Biology teacher Meredith Loy is enjoying the positive teaching experience.
Loy student taught in the Boston Public School system last year, and received her undergraduate degree from MIT in the spring. She was immediately drawn to South after her first interview.
“When I first came to South I met everyone and walked around the school and everyone was just so positive…I thought it was a very good place where everyone was trying to be their best self and I thought that was really admirable,” Loy said.
Loy is excited to be in a large high school community because she experienced her high school life in a smaller school. She loves seeing the excitement in students everyday.
“Even when the blocks are crazy, it is because the students are crazy excited, which is a positive energy rather than an ‘I don’t want to be here’ attitude. They are excited to learn and ask questions,” Loy said.
She is already seeing the welcoming atmosphere Newton South provides; she feels constant support from her fellow teachers, and her students are always engaged.
“No matter how much I come into the office and I say ‘oh my gosh this block was crazy,’ the staff are always so nice and they’re always saying ‘hey, it’s great, you did a good job,’” says Loy.
Overall, Loy is settling in well to Newton South and she is loving experiencing all of the great things that made her want to work here.
