This year, South welcomes many exchange students from across the world. One of them is Ana Penina.

Penina is from Espírito Santo, Brazil, and is a junior this year. She is planning on attending South for the entirety of the year, before returning to Brazil. She decided to participate in the exchange program because she loves being in a diverse environment.

“I already did an exchange program, but my parents always encourage it because it opens your mind [to other cultures],” said Penina.

Penina participated in an exchange program in Oxford, England, in the beginning of 2019 before coming to Newton this September. She explains that these programs are definitely not for everybody, but says that if someone has a slight interest, they should absolutely go for it.

“If a student really wants to learn the language and become completely fluent, and is comfortable being away from family and friends, I would definitely recommend [an exchange program]; it’s an unforgettable experience,” said Penina.

Penina explains that high school in the United States is a lot different from her school in Brazil. She describes South as having more freedom in terms of classes compared to her school back home.

“The school is bigger, and you can choose your classes. Even moving from classes is different. It has a lot of people, so there are more opportunities [to make friends],” said Penina.

Penina is grateful to those who have been welcoming to her this year, and is looking forward to an exciting time in Newton filled with new people and experiences.
