Field Hockey Ends Season With Tie

By Josh Hurwitz

Senior Jake Medoff scored South’s only goal as the Lions’ field hockey team ended its season with a 1-1 tie against Concord-Carlisle Friday at home.

The Lions bring their season to a close with a 2-11-5 record, the best season in ten years.

Prior to the game, a ceremony was held to honor and thank the seniors playing on the team. Senior players reflected on the past season with much pride and pleasure.

“Playing field hockey at South has been amazing,” senior Annie O’Brien said. “I have learned valuable life lessons such as, to have faith in yourself and never give up.”

After the ceremony, the Lions took the field with passion and fight, eager to win their final game.

The first half was slow, with both teams unable to score. The Lions had a few fast breaks led by senior Jon Striker, but were unable to convert them into goals.

The defense throughout the game was strong, led by captains Maggie Whalen in goal and O’Brien leading the defense.

In the second half, South came out ferociously. After a halftime pep talk from first year coach Kim Desko, the Lions looked as if they couldn’t be stopped. South scored on a beautiful shot by Medoff. Officials reviewed the shot, but allowed it to stand.

Only seconds after Medoff put the Lions on the board, Concord-Carlisle put a shot past Whalen to tie the game 1-1.

From then on, defense dominated, each team gaining very few scoring opportunities as the game progressed. O’Brien made many great defensive plays, and Striker came close to scoring multiple times.

“The team was happy to end the season with a tie,” Whalen said. “It was really special to end my senior season on such a good note.”
