This season, the Newton South boys’ lacrosse team has reached an enormous achievement as they have made the state tournament for the first time in recent history. Junior captain Jack Briney has played an essential role in contributing to the Lion’s accomplishment.
Briney has shown his ability as a teammate playing as a midfielder as well as taking the faceoffs in each game. He has been an offensive force this season with 40 goals and 37 assists.
In addition to lacrosse, Briney has also been an important player on the varsity football team this past fall.
This week, Denebola got the chance to sit down with Jack Briney as South is set to face Silver Lake High School in the first round of the tournament on Wednesday.
When did you start playing lacrosse and why?
“I started playing lacrosse when I was seven years old. I started playing because my best friend Ethan was playing, so we just decided to play lacrosse together.”
How was the team been this season?
“The team has played really well this season. We are playing more as a team than we have in the past. Our defensive has been really good and with the help of our new assistant coach, Coach Sellew, we have been able to score more on offense.”
What was it like to make the postseason? What are your expectations?
“It’s been awesome making the postseason as we have been working for this all season. I’m really happy we have gotten there as a team. I am expecting a huge victory in the playoffs and am hoping to win the tournament and the state championship. I am expecting that we do pretty well.”
Do you have any superstitions or routines before games?
“Before a game, I’m a huge superstition guy. I don’t like doing anything different; I do the same stretches every time, I usually have a sandwich and I get some water.”
Do you have any future plans with lacrosse?
“As of now, no. I’m just planning on playing club lacrosse in college.”
