Athlete of the Week: Lucy Jenks

Two weeks ago at the New Balance Indoor Nationals, Lucy Jenks, a junior at Newton South, ran a swift 4:45.93 in the Girls 1 Mile Run event. Now boasting an All-American title and ranked fifth in the country for the indoor mile, Jenks looks to continue her running career and beat her record at next year’s New Balance Nationals.
What motivates you?
“I want to be the best I can be. Obviously I want to keep getting better and improving. My team also pushes and helps me.”
What makes a great athlete?
“A great athlete is someone who is dedicated and cares about doing well along with showing up to practice and trying their best every time.”
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced athletically?
“The biggest challenge I’ve faced athletically was choosing between soccer and running, the two sports I love the most. I had to determine what I cared about more and which I was going to focus on more than the other.”
What is your biggest accomplishment?
“My biggest achievement is placing 5th at Nationals and getting All American.”
What is a word of advice you have for other athletes at Newton South?
“Have fun with what you’re doing. Don’t worry too hard about your results because they will come if you just work hard enough.”
Are you planning to continue your running career at South?
“Yes! I want to run in college as well.”
