Senior football captain Luke Cloud has proved to be an important asset to Newton South’s varsity football team during his high school career, starting at quarterback for the past two years.
This year, Cloud has already started the season off tremendously, leading the team to two victories in as many games. Last week, the Lions defeated Winchester on a game-winning touchdown pass by Cloud with only seconds left in the game. Friday night, in the annual under the lights football game, South beat Brookline on Cloud’s game-winning pass with just 43 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
This week, Denebola got a chance to sit down with Cloud, discussing the start of an undefeated football season.
When did you start playing football?
“I started playing football when I was in eighth grade at Brown Middle School. I was a wide receiver at the time. I did not play football freshman year, but I came back sophomore year and played quarterback. I still play quarterback today.”
What is your favorite part about being captain and quarterback?
“My favorite part about being a captain and quarterback is that I get to be a leader on the field. It keeps me engaged, and I am forced to give 100% all practice long and always be on guard.”
How is the team this season?
“This season I think we have a chance to be really good. We have a lot of potential as long as the guys give 100% all season. We can be really good and win a lot of games.”
How did you feel going into the Friday night lights game against Brookline and what did it feel like to score a game-winning touchdown in the last quarter?
“I felt that we were prepared for Friday night and we had a solid week of practice. When I threw that last touchdown, I was super excited because the whole game we weren’t able to convert in the red zone, so it felt great to finally score.”
What goals do you hold for yourself and the team?
“Individually want to limit the number of interceptions I throw to under five for the whole season. I also want to throw for at least 10 touchdowns. As a team goal, I want to make the playoffs and win at least a couple games in the playoffs. I also want us to keep getting progressively better throughout the season.”
What are your plans for football in the future?
“I would like to play with my friends around a college campus, but nothing more than that. I am not planning for anything too serious.”
