While the first installment of Pitch Perfect highlighted the world of competitive collegiate a capella in an incredibly enjoyable way, its sequel, Pitch Perfect 2, didn’t do the Barden Bellas justice.
Most of the classic Barden Bellas, along with a few a capella novices, are on a quest to redeem themselves after a mishap at the President’s birthday bash. Banned from all national competitions, they try to salvage their reputation by attempting to beat out an intimidating German troupe at the World A Capella Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The humor, a highly entertaining feature of the first movie, was incredibly disappointing in the sequel. Some of the jokes were funny, but we never laughed audibly. We found most of the humor awkward and cumbersome.
Throughout the movie, character after character threw out racist, sexist, and uncomfortable comments that, while they elevated the first movie, just left us squirming this time around.
In regards to the music, a major part of this franchise, the arrangements were messy and often confusing. Long story short, we have no intention of purchasing the soundtrack.
It has been three years since the original Pitch Perfect was released. Since then the movie has become almost irrelevant, replaced by other films that handle the uphill battles this movie fought with a lot more finesse.
Two of the most memorable features of the first movie, Becca’s (Anna Kendrick’s) cup song and the witty humor of Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson), returned more annoying than ever.
Overall, neither of us enjoyed the movie because the jokes and characters seemed forced and stale. Maybe we’re outside the target audience now, or maybe it’s just because the movies were released so far apart, but the hype that made the first movie so beloved just wasn’t there for the second.

I had high expectations for the sequel of a movie I loved so much. Pitch Perfect 2 just didn’t manage to deliver.
Anastasia: 1 Star
I don’t think I laughed once during the whole movie, and none of the characters can sing.
