The winter season is in full swing and the Boys’ Hockey team hit the ground running with a 3-1 victory over Bourne High School on Saturday. The loss of graduated seniors from the team was minimal, leaving the young team with a promising season.
“We outplayed Bourne High School throughout the game and we had the most puck possession. Overall we played great but lots of improvement to be done,” captain Alex Klapes said.
During all three periods, Bourne struggled to overcome the teams’ impervious defense lead by Klapes.
“There were great plays in the defensive zone that help prevent Bourne from scoring. And of course, tons of great saves from Lucas Maregni,” Klapes said.
It was not only the teams’ strong defensive line-up that contributed the victory. Johnny Baker, a senior who has never struggled to put the puck in the back of the net, scored two goals and Sophomore Tim Dobbies knocked in a third. These offensive powerhouses were assisted all three times by junior Eric Donlan.
Although a few players from last years team had graduated, the team remains young, boasting mostly sophomores and juniors. After putting in the hours during the offseason and the rising of skilled freshmen, the team’s youth is unlikely to interfere with the teams’ success this season.
“This will definitely be a strong season. We’ve got lots of good hockey players, especially a few freshmen like Nathan Cohen. The boys are really looking forward to this season, I believe we’ll be a very successful program this year and years to come. We are a very young team but we have a lot of talent,” captain Chris Aucoin said.
After last seasons fall to St. Joe’s Academy in round two of playoffs, the boys are looking to redeem themselves with not only a successful regular season but a victorious postseason as well.
“Our goal for the season is to make the tournament, then hopefully a championship,” Aucoin said.
Be sure to pack the John A. Ryan Arena on January 2nd to watch the Lions bring the heat on the ice against Methuen High School.
