This past Saturday night, under the lights, the Newton South boys’ lacrosse team dominated Watertown by a score of 18-12. The boys were able to dominate both halves of the ball and control the tempo of the game.
“The team played very well and scored a lot on offense. [We’re] looking forward to making the Division 1 State tournament [for the first time] in this school’s history,” junior captain Joe Busa said.
Busa stated there was great ball handling skills throughout the vast majority of the game. Being able to control the ball allowed the Lions to set the pace of the game, speeding it up and pushing the ball when they want to and slowing it down at other times.
Busa was happy with his personal performance as he demonstrated incredible defensive skills until the last whistle and proved to be a role model for the everyone on the team.
Jack Briney, another junior captain who had three goals on the night, mentioned the team’s effort and aggressiveness in games. By coming out strong, South has been able to be competitive and jump out to early leads.
“It’s really great to see all the hard work everyone has been doing start to pay off,” said Briney. “The difference in the tempo is really noticeable. Our newest assistant coach has also been a really solid addition to the team. It allows for more one on one time.”
Briney, an attacker and midfielder for the boys’ team, has also been a key asset for the team’s success. He has added a strong offensive force that puts pressure on the opponents. He currently has tallied 32 goals and 27 assists.
“This year we’ve really been able to step up and take on more leadership roles that will help teach the underclassmen,” said Briney. “We’re at our best performance with all hands on deck.”
