The first meet of the season for the girls outdoor track team was a huge success. The team won 104-38 against Waltham High School last Tuesday.
The team has been working hard these first few weeks of the season to get a good base for their first meet against Waltham. Denebola had the chance to interview senior and captain, Kaity Shaughnessy a few days after the meet.
Shaughnessy told us, “It was amazing to have the whole team back together and our hard work truly showed. There was so much improvement from our returning girls and the new girls really impressed us all.” There were also many standout performances during this meet.
Danya Goldstein, a senior, set a new school record in the discus, by over four feet. Shaughnessy also tells us, Amelia Everett, a sophomore distance runner, “had an incredible 400 meter time right on the edge of breaking the ever so hard one minute barrier”. The girls track team is already very successful, so the hopes for the rest of the season are high.
Everyone is excited to see what the girls can do this year. With the new mandate allowing outdoor sports to go mask free, the rest of the season is shaping up to be exciting. Shaughnessy hopes that the girls can “help each other through hard workouts as we are all going through similar struggles with COVID-19”.
The girls hope to continue winning meets and setting personal records as the season progresses. Over the next few weeks the girls will be doing hard work outs so they can reach the goals they have set for themselves.
She concludes by leaving her final statement, saying, “We have a lot of talent on the team and I can’t wait to see the girls flourish”.
