Fit Check Friday by Tae Hong and Maya Mohanti has become a Newton South phenomenon. Every Friday, a short 90-second video is uploaded to the Newton South High School Denebola Instagram; hundreds of viewers watch the compiled fits of students and teachers, which Hong and Mohanti gather throughout the week.
Hong states, “Although my and Maya’s videos aren’t that big or have many viewers, the project has still inspired me with ideas of different projects as well as continuing to be a part of Denebola.”
At the beginning of this once small and simple project, Mohanti and Hong never thought their idea would become so incredibly popular. The two creators started by simply recording students and teachers across the school with their phones. They often encountered poor sound and video quality, as well as many other obstacles. However, as Fit Check Friday began to gain fame, Mohanti and Hong upgraded to a camera and microphone.
Fit Check Friday has become a prominent stamp of the student lifestyle at Newton South High School. Students come to Mohanti and Hong asking to be a part of the segment. Isabel Dantas, a frequent viewer of Fit Check Friday, states, “It’s something that brings the whole school together. We all look forward to seeing the fun videos at the end of the week.”
Due to the popularity, the demand of students to be part of the segment has increased. Hong acknowledges this by saying, “Apologies if you didn’t make the video for that week—there are often technical difficulties.”
Mohanti would specifically like to say how hardworking and devoted Hong is to this fun project, as she edits and puts all the clips together every week. I know this entire project would not be possible without Tae and her savvy tech skills.
Fit Check Friday has become a prominent factor of Newton South. Hong and Mohanti love collecting the diversity and range of clothing styles among students and teachers. We both have the privilege and opportunity to talk to people we never have talked to before and realize how cool and unique the school is.
