Newton South football team lost to Lincoln-Sudbury 35-14 on Saturday.
“The kids played hard,” head coach Ted Dalicandro said. “LS capitalized on our mistakes, but I’m proud of the kids.”
The Lions came out very strong in the first half. In the first quarter, South held LS from scoring.
One minute into the second, however, Lincoln Sudbury scored a 20-yard touchdown pass, taking a 7-0 lead. Junior Anthony Denitto responded with a 55-yard run to get South onto the board, making the score 6-7.
In the last few minutes of the half, South was in scoring position. With 23 seconds left on the clock, the Lions came up short on fourth down.
LS ran into the end zone from 4-yards out for a 14-6 lead with 4:45 left in third quarter.
The Warriors also capitalized on a Lions fumble, running a 80-yard touchdown to end the third.
Running a 78-yard touchdown, LS extended its lead to 28-6 with 7:34 left in fourth quarter, followed by another 40-yard touchdown before the end of the game.
“Something we can work on is definitely making stops on third and long plays,” Denitto said.
Sophomore Dylan Meehan recorded South’s last touchdown of the game, decreasing the 35-14 deficit. The Lions move to 2-1 on the season.
“I’m proud of the way they played and I think we have a good team moving forward,” Dalicandro said.
The team’s next game is Thursday, Oct 2, at Acton-Boxboro at 7:00 pm.
