The Newton South football team remains undefeated after beating Boston Latin last Friday night, 42-12.
Junior Paul Budge believes that beating Boston Latin was just the win the team needed.
“We had all the right strategies and worked hard to defeat Boston Latin last Friday,” he said.
South started out strong in the first quarter, getting ahead quickly. Junior Mason Spence had the first touchdown of the game and the extra point was from senior Finn Kearns. The first quarter concluded with a score of 7-0, South in the lead.
In the start of the second quarter, Kearns scored the second touchdown of the game by catching a 12-yard pass made by junior captain and quarterback Nick Heras.
However, the Lion’s attempt at the extra point this time did not work. As the quarter progressed, Spence made an 8-yard run for yet another touchdown for Newton South.
Senior captain Ethan Meyer caught a noteworthy pass made by Heras; however, the Lions could not score.
Boston Latin made a comeback in the last part of the second quarter with a 1-yard run for a touchdown by Roy Bahman. Missing the extra point, the Lions ended the second quarter with a score of 21-6, still in the lead.
Meyer started the third quarter off with a touchdown, and Kearns made the extra point again. The third quarter ended with a score of 35-12 with senior Tyrone Thornton scoring a touchdown for the Lions.
South ended the game strong in the fourth quarter with a 55-yard touchdown run from Heras. Kearns made the extra point for the last time. When the final whistle blew, South had defeated Boston Latin 42-12.
“We are optimistic about this season,” Budge said.
South’s next game is away against Lincoln Sudbury High School Friday night at 7PM. Fan buses will provide transportation for students who wish to attend the game.
