Freshman Starts DJ Business

By Ethan EpsteinSome students may work during the weekends or have summer jobs, but freshman Max Baker has already started a popular business of his own — a DJing business.

The business started last year when he played the music at many small school events and parties, but Baker’s first paid event was a friend’s sweet 16. That pivotal event would start what is now Baker’s pride and joy, his business: KB Entertainment, which he describes on its Facebook page as “affordable, reliable, and professional.”

In his eyes, his most successful event was a private event called “The Rager,” where he and his friends, Henry Forman and Zach Ruben, threw a large party, at which Baker DJed.

Baker’s business is rapidly growing, especially considering he started from ground zero.

“My business is doing well,” he said. “Sometimes business is slow and I only DJ events once or twice a month but last June I was up to two to three events a week.”

However, there is a price to this growth. Baker found that he could not do all the work alone and needed to hire another employee.
After he and his old business partner went their separate ways, he hired a new co-worker, freshman Noah Finn.

“I was hired a couple of weeks ago, and I do mostly what Max does: DJ, get songs, and help set up, when Max is unable to do it,” Finn said. “I think that I am helpful and make the business more productive.”

Though Baker is the business manager, from the beginning, he accepted Finn as an equal.“I have had no problems yet,” Finn said. “Max is great and this is a great first job.”

Baker believes that DJing is just like any other skill in that it requires work and motivation, though, his busy school schedule is making that more difficult.

“I used to practice at least 6 hours a week but with school work and more gigs that has gone down dramatically to about one [hour],” he said. “I wish I could practice more.”

Although on the job he mostly plays party music, he loves music of all types. “I listen to all genres of music, rock, metal, blues, hip hop, techno, everything,” said Baker.

In the future he plans to expand the business even further. “I will be working with a large entertainment company that does many events in the Boston area,” he said. “However, I’m not sure how much I can talk about that.”

Students from around South are quite fond of what Max is doing with his company.

“I don’t personally know Max, but what he’s doing is so cool and it is inspiring to know that even at our age we can start a successful business,” sophomore Jeanie Na said.

Finn has similar plans for the future. He hopes that the business will expand. “All I have to say is that is anyone ever needs a DJ, they should call us first,” he said.
