Library’s Innovative Technology Not Here To Stay

By Abby Patkin

In the library’s relatively unchanging setting, students were surprised Friday and today to enter and find a new technological display complete with rolling chairs and desks.

Sadly, these remnants of the Newton Schools Foundation’s Alumni Awards night on Saturday, are not here to stay, although it is uncertain when the company will come to retrieve them.

“Vendors set up in the library with new technology, our Mediascape,” librarian Ethel Downey said. “[There were] some tables, some chairs, [and] we had a little robot photo1[and] a leap motion interactive monitor, fancy speakers, things like that.”

Downey said the vendors brought in the new technology because the alumni event was also a fundraiser to raise money for new technology and create innovation centers for the Newton schools, much like the Mediascape station currently in the library.

In the meantime, students can be found in the library wheeling around in the rolling chairs throughout the day, but while librarians encouraged students to experience the new technology, they cautioned against overzealously using the rolling chairs.
