The Lions defeated Boston Latin 49-20 at home on Saturday.
South started off the game slow, giving up two touchdowns in the first quarter and then a third right at the beginning of the second quarter.
“Our weakness is that we come out slow and it takes a few minutes to get our momentum going, which is something we need to work on in the games to come,” head coach Ted Dalicandro said.
The Lions picked it up in the second quarter with a 67-yard-touchdown from sophomore quarterback Austin Burton to junior Frankie Barros. Sophomore Sasha Hoban had a 20-yard-run for another touchdown in the second quarter.
The Lions continued to dominate for the remainder of the game. Junior running back Jamyre Soberanis ran in a touchdown at the beginning of the third. South then went for two, when senior Michael Garfinkle ran the ball in for the extra points. At the end of the third, Soberanis ran in another touchdown for South, giving them a 29-20 lead.
“We started out flat, but we did something that in the past years Newton South never did,” senior captain Liam Brandel said. “We came back in the second half and showed what we are made out of.”
The Lions dominated the fourth quarter. To start off the quarter junior Anthony DeNitto caught a 99-yard-touchdown, receiving the ball from an incomplete fourth down attempt by Boston Latin. Boston Latin then fumbled the ball on the next drive, giving South the ball at the 13-yard-line. Garfinkle ran it in for a touchdown. With only a few minutes left in the game, Soberanis got his third touchdown of the day, finishing the game with a score of 49-20.
“When it came time to step up, everyone did, not just the receivers or the line,” Garfinkle said. “Everybody stepped up and that’s what got us such a good win.”
South’s next game is on Saturday, Sep 27 at 12 pm at home against Lincoln Sudbury.
