Newton, MA — Newton South’s football team lost to Acton-Boxborough, 48-14, on Senior Day Saturday, allowing 368 yards of total offense and 6 offensive touchdowns to their Dual County League rival.
South’s offense produced 180 yards and two touchdowns. They also lost two turnovers, one of which was a fumble that AB picked up in the end zone for a touchdown.
Matt Roberts racked up 61 yards on 3 receptions and two TD’s, and sophomore quarterback Nick Heras threw for 137 yards, completing 9 of 14 passes and 2 TD’s, with one INT and one fumble.
The game started off in AB’s control. They scored on the first play from scrimmage on a 52-yard touchdown run. After South’s first drive stalled, AB scored again on a 1-yard touchdown run, giving AB a 14-0 lead to end the first quarter.
The second quarter started with Heras leading a drive and finding Roberts, a senior, for a 25-yard touchdown.
As soon as AB regained possession they scored again with a 63-yard touchdown.
On South’s next possession, the Lions were pushed back near their own goal line. On third down, Heras was sacked and fumbled the ball which was recovered for yet another AB touchdown.
After another South turnover, this time due to an interception, AB converted again, with a 25-yard touchdown pass, giving AB a 34-7 lead.
After the touchdown, South responded by scoring on a touchdown pass of their own, with Heras and Roberts hooking up for another score, this time in the back of the end zone, with Roberts laying out for a spectacular diving catch.
With less than a minute left in the half, AB pushed the ball and scored on a 25-yard
touchdown pass giving AB a 41-14 lead.
The second half was quiet offensively. After South was stopped on their first drive, AB drove and scored again making the score 48-14. This was the final score of game, as South fell to a DCL powerhouse. Their next game is Thanksgiving Day at Lincoln Sudbury.
