Each year, seniors compete for the Senior Cup awards presented at graduation. Typically, the female Senior Cup is awarded to one student and the male Senior Cup to one student, based on nominations and votes from students and faculty. Here are this year’s finalists:
Anna Alsop
Achievements – Member of track team for four years, editor-in-chief of yearbook, two-year veteran of the AIDS walk, National Merit Scholarship receiver, peer tutor in school
Why she might win: Anna not only participates in an astounding number of extracurriculars including various sports and AIDS activism events, but is also able to excel in academics. Anna is recognized as a person who always helps others in school, not only as a peer tutor but also in class with her classmates.
Sara Wang
Achievements: Captain of the cross-country team, member of indoor and outdoor track team, National Merit Scholarship finalist
Why she might win: Sara has shown her quality of commitment through running by being an active member of the cross country, indoor and outdoor track teams at South. She has also been an active member of the town community, volunteering at the Centre Street Food Pantry and the Cooking School For the Blind.
Lauren Forrow
Achievements: Winner of sophomore speech contest, actress in South Stage’s school plays, member of Water Aid International
Why she might win: Known as a truly compassionate member of the Newton South community, Lauren is always there for everyone who needs comforting. Her peers applaud her genuine care for others as her best and most unique trait. Her kindness was especially shown when she brought baked goods and chocolate for her entire grade of peers this year to help ease the stress from the college admission process.
Matthew Marcus
Accomplishments: Co-captain of the golf team junior and senior year, member of the Jazz combo
Why he might win: Both an athlete and a musician, Matt has excelled in both fields which makes him a good choice for the Senior Cup. He has stayed committed as a varsity athlete and is a key member of his jazz band.
Jack Lovett
Accomplishments: South Senate all four years, South Senate president for two years, mock trial all four years and co-captain this past year, member of history club, member of Dreamfar (sophomore year), opinion columnist for Denebola (junior year), member of the Lion’s Roar (freshman and sophomore year), Lion’s Roar web editor (sophomore year).
Why he might win: Jack’s commitment to the student body is just one example of his commitment to the school as a whole. A leader of the South Senate and mock trial club, Jack has distinguished himself as a key member of the Newton South community. Jack is loyal and hard-working.
Thomas Howe
Accomplishments: Howe was Class president, wrote several pieces for the Lion’s Roar and was a section editor. Howe also participated in photography and helped edit the yearbook on the yearbook club. Howe was a member of the Tertulia club and helped found the economics club. In addition, Howe was a recruitment manager for AIDS walk club and a South senator. Howe participated in the ski and snowboard club his freshman year, ran indoor track briefly, and played soccer.
Why he might win: A huge member of his community, Tom credits his success to his classmates and those around him. From leading his grade as class president to helping with Tertulia and the AIDS Walk, Tom has been a positive contributor to the Newton South and Newton communities as a whole during his high school career. He feels like he has learned from the community and that opening his eyes has caused him to have a positive outlook on life, shown clearly by choice of his favorite quote, “Viva la gang.”
