This year, Newton South welcomes Michelle Caine to the science department; she is thrilled to be working with students and teaching in person this year.

Previously having taught AP Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, and Sexuality Health, she now teaches Biology and Physics. Caine earned her Masters in Education at Harvard Graduate School of Education and completed her student teaching at Excel High School (South Boston High), the high school that she attended.

She expresses how virtual teaching was a difficult and troublesome assignment: “If I saw peoples’ faces and was able to use a physical whiteboard, I might not have found last year as devastating. I am thrilled to be back in person,” said Caine.

Caine describes how she is impressed with students and states how, “Even students that have not loved science or math in the past are coming into my room with an open mind, willing to engage in whatever I have planned.”

In addition to being passionate about the sciences, Caine also participates in photography and hiking outside of work.

Caine emphasizes how she hopes her students will, through her class, see themselves as “capable, powerful people worthy of effort and dedication.” She strives to make her class great for her students and says, “if a student can be authentically themselves in my classroom, I have done my job.”
