Recap: South 49, North 81
By Jack Hooker
The No. 5 North boys’ basketball team beat the Lions 81-49 Saturday at the TD Garden with a combined 13 three-pointers.
South’s inability to stop the Tigers’ offense started early in the first quarter, when the Lions gave up four treys, two from junior captain Tommy Mobley (35 points, six three-pointers). Junior forward Mark Karmiy (11 points) was the first to put the Lions on the board, hitting a shot behind the arc. Senior guard Ethan Meyer had a couple of steals and took a charge in the first quarter; however, South’s turnovers far outnumbered those of North in the first. South trailed 21-9 after the first buzzer sounded.

The struggles for South continued in the second quarter, when the team was unable to keep up with North’s torrid shooting. Mobley had 14 points, including a step back three from NBA range to end the half. Karmiy led the scoring in the second quarter for South with six points, including two free throws. Junior captain Geoffrey Gray (six points) and sophomore guard Alex Kiritsy each had a basket in the second, but this was all not enough, as North increased the margin to 41-25 at the end of the first half.
Freshman center Sasha Hoban stepped up in the third quarter, scoring six points, including a put back. South’s 11 points in the third couldn’t contend with the 22 from North, though, which included six three-pointers (three from Mobley). Blocks from Meyer and Gray weren’t enough to keep the Lions in the game; the third quarter ended with a score of 69-36.
Only scoring nine points in the fourth quarter, North was still able to hold onto the lead with a 81-49 victory. Senior captain Phil Levine-Caleb went 6-10 at the line, including 3-6 in the fourth. Senior guard Max Hooker also saw the line multiple times in the fourth, shooting 5-6 at the line. North manager Brendan Durkin checked into the game late in the fourth quarter, hitting a buzzer beater shot. Durkin talked about the game to ESPN after it had finished.
South (4-6) drops to second place in the conference. Next game is Sunday at 7 p.m. at Waltham (5-4).
