Notes From the First Week of Practice

Boys Volleyball

The boys volleyball team has been maximizing their practice time in preparation for the season, making sure to perfect the fundamentals before their first game.
Over the weekend, the team played multiple scrimmages, including matchups against Weymouth, Quincy, and Taunton. Additionally, they had another scrimmage on March 29th vs Natick and scrimmaged Brockton on the 30th. The Lions made sure to execute and get in lots of repetitions in all of these match-ups.
The regular season officially begins this Friday when the team travels to take on DCL rival Lincoln-Sudbury.
Boys Tennis

Due to the warm winter, the boys tennis team was able to get outside for their first week of practice.
During their practices, they have been playing head to head matches to figure out the where each player ranks within the team. The first one to win eight games in the head to head matchup wins the match. The records of each individual player will be used to determine the rankings and the rosters for varsity and JV.
The tennis team will take on Boston Latin in their first official game on Monday.
Girls Tennis

The girls tennis team has had a great first week of practice. With their roster finalized, their only task left is to determine the rankings of their players within the team.
The team had a scrimmage on Wednesday against Medfield, where they won almost every match. They are optimistic about the season which starts with their first game on Monday against Ursuline.
Boys Track and Field

For the first week of practice, the boys track and field team has been focusing on building endurance in the form of core workouts, push ups, lifting, and longer runs. Their goal is to develop a base so that they can build up more speed and technical pieces of racing once they have a strong foundation.
After a week of time trials and endurance workouts, the team is going to begin training with more intense track workouts to focus and get them prepared for their upcoming races.
Their season officially kicks off on Tuesday with a tri-meet against Weston and Boston Latin.
Girls Track and Field

The girls track and field team has kicked their season off to a good start with an intense two weeks of training. With a lot of young talent, the sprinters, distance runners and throwers are all looking to be a big threat in the DCL this season.
The first week has featured hard workouts and long team meetings as they prepare for their first competition in a tri-meet against Weston and Boston Latin this Tuesday.
Along with the physical training, the veterans of the team have been tasked with teaching the new athletes the routines of Newton South track and field. Many are experiencing a whole new atmosphere at the high school level, and the upperclassmen are trying to get them prepared for their upcoming meet.
Watch out for the girls track and field team on April 5th as they are heavy favorites coming into the meet.
Girls Lacrosse

Unlike last year, there was little snow on the ground this past week, so the girls were able to kick off their season with practices outside.
Adjusting to the new varsity coach, Molly Widrick, they spent time working on all skills to prepare them for the upcoming season. After a tough performance at the jamboree this past Tuesday, winning only 1 of the 3 possible games, the team looks to improve on the results before the season starts.
After making it to the playoffs last year for the first time in over 20 years, the team looks poised for another great season, due to the many returning varsity players from last year.
The girls season kicked off on Thursday with a loss at the hands of DCL powerhouse, Acton- Boxboro.
Boys Lacrosse

The boys varsity lacrosse team has high hopes for their upcoming season. With roughly 25 boys forming a solid lineup, the team expects to have a strong offense this year.
Ground balls have been the main focus in practice, with passing drills being a success also. They’re hoping for a stronger season than the previous year and are working hard to achieve just that.
The team kicked off their season with an 8-3 win against Belmont on Saturday.
Girls Softball

Girls softball has had a tiring two weeks of practices. With seven days of tryouts, the softball team has been working hard to set a roster. Tryouts extended into Saturday, where they played three scrimmages.
With all tryouts completed, they were ready to get outside and onto the field. They have been focusing mainly on conditioning and drills to prepare for their first game at Medfield on April 4th.
Boys Baseball

The Newton South baseball program has been utilizing the indoor and outdoor batting cages in preparation for the upcoming season. Players are doing tee work, using weighted bats, and receiving front toss to fine tune their skills. The team has been stressing getting in a lot of high-quality repetitions.
The weather has been less than cooperative this past week as rain and a chance of snow hinders the Lions ability to practice outside
On Thursday, the Lions defeated East Boston in a friendly scrimmage, providing them with a chance to face live competition as they prepare for their season opener against Boston Latin scheduled for Monday.
