Rules of the Game: Swimming and Diving
By Sam Rosenblatt

Swimming and diving consists of five swimming strokes, three relays, and diving itself.
The five strokes are freestyle (with 50, 100, 200, and 500 yard races), backstroke (with 100 yard races), breaststroke (with 100 yard races), butterfly (with 100 yard races), and the individual medley, where swimmers swim 50 yards each of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly for a total of 200 yards.
One relay is the 200 yard medley relay, which is similar to the individual medley. However, in the medley relay, each of the four athletes involved swims a different stroke. There are also 100 yard and 200 yard freestyle relays.
Placing in the top five in an event earns points for the team, with first place earning the most points. The team with the most points after all events wins the meet.
The Newton South swimming and diving team competes and practices at Newton North High School’s 25 yard swimming pool.
