The Science Department held an open house Monday night, inviting students and parents from the community to observe the work students did during the year.

“I was glad of the turnout,” biology teacher and assistant department head Amy Richard said. “The students were engaged and

from the surveys I collected, learned about what is happening at South science.”

Student demonstrations included: a robot from the Ligerbots team, a 3-D printer from engineering presented by junior Daniel Brack, a robotic arm from the science team presented by senior Daniel Shaar, endangered species projects from honors biology, family chemistry projects, genetic disorder projects from Jeff Burt’s classes, Galapagos Island presentations from Mita Bhattacharya’s classes, and others.

Richard and the other science eepartment administrative intern Jordan Kraus organized and coordinated the annual event for its second year in existence.

“As a department last year, we decided our students were doing such great work it was a shame it wasn’t being shared with the community,” Richard said. “It is important to celebrate our successes.”

Richard said she believes that the night is a way for the community to be aware of what their children and peers are doing and for students to be educated about what topics are available for them in upcoming years.

“I was proud of all the hard work from the students and was glad there was an opportunity for other people to see what I see everyday – that South has an amazing groups of students and faculty,” Richard said. “Next year we are hoping to have an even bigger turnout and to fill the lecture hall for the speakers.”
