On a chilly October Friday night, Newton South and Cambridge battled it out on Newton South’s senior night. In the hard-fought game, Newton South prevailed with a 20-14 win.

Senior captain Patrick Sullivan credits practice for their win, “I think the week of practice before the game definitely helped us get the win because it prepared us for what they were going to do on both sides of the ball.” South played very well with their offense gaining over 300 yards.  A big part of their offensive success came from Sullivan (a receiver) and quarterback Everson Quissanga connecting multiple big plays. That connection has been the team’s bread and butter so far this year, and Friday was no exception.

The offense couldn’t have done it without their defense, who played extremely well, forcing multiple turnovers and holding Cambridge to just 14 points.  Although they got the win, Sullivan admits that the team isn’t perfect and will look to improve this week during practice. “I felt good about the team’s performance for the most part. Obviously, there are some things we need to clean up, and I am no exception to that, but we played well enough to get the win.”

When asked who he thought impacted the game the most, Sullivan’s answer was the Toyias brothers, Harry Capidilupo and Everson Quissanga. “[Harry Capidilupo] and the Toyiases were hard hitters and applied pressure… while Everson led the offense to do what it needed to do and execute,” Sullivan said. While those players had exceptional games, the whole team played well and contributed to the win.

South will look to finish out the season strong and continue their winning streak. “Right now, we have a winning record… I would like to win at least one of the next two games to maintain that winning record,”  Sullivan said.  If South is able to maintain their winning record, it will be just the second time they have finished with a winning record since 2015.
