Top members of the Newton South boys’ and girls’ swim and dive teams competed this past weekend at the Sectionals event where the girls placed 11th and the boys placed 5th respectively.
All of the girls’ relays came out strong with an especially good performance from the 200-yard Medley relay consisting of junior Rosie McLeod, senior Kristen Miquel, sophomore Miya Johnston and senior captain Colleen McElduff, which placed 7th overall.
McElduff, senior captain Rebecca Silverman, sophomore Emily Ochlis and Miquel also placed the 400-yard freestyle relay in 14th place to end the girls’ meet.
“Sectionals was a great meet. We had a lot of sick swimmers the week leading up to it, but we ended up doing pretty well,” McElduff said.
“Kristen [Miquel] broke the 200 IM school record and also had an amazing breaststroke race. She scored a ton of points for us there, and was a major contribution to the relays,” she added.
Johnston and McLeod had strong individual performances as well and each qualified for an individual event at States this weekend.
The boys started off their meet strong with seniors Jack Sinclair, Andrew D’Annolfo, Arlen Williams, and junior Rafi Dinh captured 5th in the 200-yard Medley relay with a time of 1:41.
The boys’ 100-yard backstroke was also a very strong event with Sinclair, and sophomores Kyle Lo and Amit Fudim placing 5th, 7th and 13th respectively and sees them all qualify for States.
The dive team also had an impressive performance with all four Sectionals divers, Jordi Boulerice, Jonah Raisner, Shaw Miller and Andrea Tartaglia, qualifying for States. Boulerice was able to place 3rd with Raisner close behind him in 7th place.
The next step for the Lions is the State meet this weekend.
